About
Welcome! If anything here resonates with you then I have good news: I am your people! Follow along with Unplugged Outdoors to gain the courage to live a life to the beat of your own drum.
What will your legacy be?
I’m on a mission to disrupt the status quo of modern daily life by encouraging people to unplug and embrace the beautiful (yet complicated) reality of life through their own eyes, instead of through a screen. Unplugged Outside is my attempt to help you foster deep connections with nature and your community, without being tethered inside to your screen at the end of a charging cable.
I hope to offer warm encouragement and simple actions you can take towards making our world a more equitable and pleasant place to co-exist. By building your personal connection to nature, your appreciation for the outdoors will ripple out to those around you. Together, we can build a network of people who cherish the earth and its inhabitants, and who take mindful action to help it all flourish.
I’ve been intent on leaving this world better than I found it since before I even had a kid. Now that my daughter is here, my inner drive to not just know better but to actually do better has kicked into the highest gear. I only get this one precious chance to leave a remarkable legacy, and I know that I cannot do it alone. I need your help.
My dream is for current and future generations to enjoy sustainable, high-quality recreation activities, clean natural resources, and healthy, thriving plants and animals (including humans!) everywhere they turn.
By becoming a part of the Unplugged Outside community, you will gain the validation, inspiration and companionship you need to lead your life with your core environmental values at the center of it.
I want to normalize:
*Walking & biking to run errands
*Homegrown fruits and veggies
*Screen-free recreation, hobbies & social gatherings
*High-quality family activities
*Intentional, sustainable shopping & living
*Face-to-face interactions
*Less consumerism
*Modern villages
*A slow-paced, seasonal way of living
*Foraging and learning about local plants
*Leaving your phone at home (or on airplane mode)
*Making things from scratch
*Journaling, sketching, and documenting experiences by hand
*Learning old-school skills
*Stargazing and appreciating the night sky
*Spontaneity and saying yes to unplanned adventures
*Finding joy in everyday rituals & releasing habit energy when the time is right
Ya with me? Let’s do this!

Hey there! I’m Kristen – a conservationist, writer, and mother to a human and 2 pets. Our little family is based in central NJ. I’m also a former hike leader, trail maintainer, and seasonal park ranger.
As you might suspect… I enjoy the outdoors! I’m so excited to share my knowledge and experience with you so that we can be the wave of change that our communities deserve.
